The Canadian Women's Hockey team is kicking ass in Turino yet there seems to be a rumbling of discontent from of all places Canada!!?
Having lived in the US for the last many many years I can understand the sour grapes whinging on the part of the US team. But what is the DEAL with this attitude from Canadians??
According to The Globe and Mail they are getting emails 'from back home suggesting it (they) have been a poor sport.' -- !??!?!?
What does this say about the Canadian psyche that they can't accept, celebrate or rejoice in this success?
Unlike Americans' 'Go for the GOLD' attitude why do Canadians settle for 'Just do your best!'....(which is fine but when you're doing well - Whats the problem!?!?)
Perhaps I have been living in the US for too long and have lost that special je ne sais quoi sensitivity that seems to be a central part of the Canadian common identity BUT still this is the Olympics - is it supposed to be 'Play to win - but only by a little bit'??
Perhaps the fact that I don't get it is indicative of the fact that I have been away too long but you can be sure that there would NOT be this issue if it were Team USA in this position.
So go girls - go kick US Ass!

Transit Strike Hell

What a horrible few days it has been for most people in NYC. The saddest part is that as the Transit workers go back to work, they really didn't accomplish much with the strike. If anything, there was alot of anger and resentment on the part of the people.
The TWU were not standing up for the 'working man' because it was the working man who was getting totally screwed by them.
The poor folks who live in the boros can't afford to pay 50$ for a cab into the city to get to work everyday! Instead they have to get up at 3Am and walk 5 miles to get to work (it is 22F outside with wind chill).
It raises the question that although it should not be a 'race to the bottom' the transit workers are complaining when they have better benefits than the majority of people today, have starting salaries that are higher than that of teachers and policemen and are doing jobs that only require a high school diploma...
At least it is almost over. All I can say is that it was a terrible experience and it is still unclear what was accomplished.

Impending holidays & Transit Strike

So there is no REAL strike yet here in NY but the stress of it was enough to keep me awake at night.
Such is the case with modern life - hard to care about an election in Iraq when your commute is going to be screwed! Sad...

So I have been busy procrastinating to avoid doing anything for my class final project. What I have been doing has been much more interesting and is all about helping others (well homeless cats anyway).
Thus far I have been working on web pages for the rescue group I volunteer with.
(Check us out http://www.nycsiamese.org ) Each cat gets an individual page and since we now have some gorgeous professional photographs (thanks to Perez de la Garza Film and Photography) I have been working hard to get them up.
